Trivandrum is full of expensive hotels; more expensive hospitals!

I have to edit this post since it was brought to my notice that naming institutions and writing about them in a not-so-encouraging tone can be an act of defamation and legally suable. So the hospital I am talking about will be called ABC and the hotel AYZ. I will have to edit the comment entries as well. Don’t want to land you guys in trouble πŸ™‚

ABC Kills; AYZ Kills too!

ABC is one of the first hospitals people think of in Trivandrum when someone falls ill and has to be taken to a hospital immediately; well mostly people who are going there for the first time. Once you have been an ABC visitor and saw those pink papers they handed to you at the end of a billion tests, you will have a vivid picture of the paper etched in the box of worst memories most minds promptly keep at the bottom of the lot. Minds knew where things belong.

A friend of mine recently had a bad case of stomach ache and from experience she knew it was the jackfruit she had. Still to make sure things were alright, she made an ABC visit. Apparently the pink paper scene failed to come out of the box at the right time. So even when her mother persistently told the jackfruit story, the hospital ritually ran her through all the multi million tests and end of the day, proudly presented the mighty pink paper. 800 bucks. For just an ordinary stomach trouble! The poor girl must have cursed the moment she felt like going to KA (read Killer ABC).

From my own personal experience, I eye KA with a look of complete vengeance and feel like Julius Caeser did when the scales finally fell from his eyes seeing Brutus in the stabber army. I didn’t say Et tu KAe though.

Another place which could use the same initials is AYZ – a moderate restaurant in the city. This place is not so killing when you compare the posh restaurants in the city. Yet when I went to take home, some parcel food, they gave me the bill (this one came in white), and I saw every item showing more than the amount I carefully marked in the menu card! β€œDon’t rely on the menu card for parcels Madam. Parcel rates are different”, says the fellow at the counter! What a rip-off! Each item was charged extra for parcel. Other places I knew, had charged only one time for parceling, listed way down below all the other items; a modest 4 or 5 bucks for the whole set.

All the KAs in this world are out to eat you alive I tell you. And this time I am keeping the pink and white papers on top of my memory boxes. Don’t want to forget them easily and make another mistake. I just wish AYZ food was not so yummy!

  1. oh AYZ charges u double for a take out? gosh! prolly we can start eating in the restaurant. Take 2 bites and then ask for a ‘to go’. :p

  2. @rose, there might have been a slight exaggeration there :D. I edited the text just in case some AYZ devotee sues me hehe

  3. strange that in most places abroad the take away is actually cheaper and we have to pay a premium to sit inside the resturarant…I remember the AYZ of old times when they used to serve excellent moderately priced food..maybe things have changed..

  4. May be you should try Bangalore πŸ˜‰ Its a black hole which sucks money for anything and everything you do.From a movie ticket at pvr for Rs200 to a whooping 10K room rent to live in, you will feel like a mole in a hole.
But still…after some time you get used to it…and to be frank I like Bangalore πŸ™‚

  5. On charging extra for parcels:
Ideally they should charge lesser as we are not using their infra/seats/parking etc and helping them save. Even after packing, I am sure its a cheaper deal for them.
    I wonder why this happen.
PS: Tvm is really really cheap ente maashe, even the 5 star buffet are cheaper.(me in Bengaluru)

  6. We are lucky to be in Trivandrum crissie!! Ask any metroites… We are living in the cheapest city…. You have to be in Bangalore or delhi…
But the extra cost for take-home orders is not fair.. But for the AYZ food , i am willing to pay some extra bucks! πŸ˜›

  7. No way…ABC is not even close to hospitals like XYZ when it comes to stroke-inducing bills. 800 rupees is nothing…my friend too had stomach pain. He went to XYZ and ended up with a bill of 10000 (no exaggeration). In the end nobody, including the doctor, knows what caused the pain. πŸ˜€

Unlucky for you that you didn’t know about AYZ’s parceling policies. But last week when I was there, I too ordered for a small party at home. The guy at the counter informed me that if we provided them with vessels for packing the food there wouldn’t be any parceling charges. So a party for 15 ppl cost just 1700. That’s unbelievably cheap. In other cities, that amount wouldn’t have sufficed for 2 ppl. Plus, we got to have AYZ food πŸ™‚ AYZ still remains my fav restaurant in Tvm.

  8. @mathew, the rates are still moderate, I was only unhappy about their parcel policies
@Gov, yeah I guess you have a point
@Nikhil, Bangalore does seem like the centre of inflation hehe.
@Srijith, yes I am beginning to appreciate that. I still dont like ABC though
@Philip, my friend stopped after the first few tests and went home when they suggested another million tests. I havent been to XYZ, I seriously thought ABC topped ’em all. But 10000?! Woah sure it wasnt appendicitis?

  9. So true….that is the scene everywhere….
But ones at kerala still seem to be much much more reliable and to a extent more affordable than ones outside kerala especially in the metro cities….The ones outside are even more blade Crissie!
Maybe KA would have to be changed to “Kind ABC” πŸ™‚

  10. nice post crissie.. when i used to frequent tvpm during late 90s, my grandparents used to go to BCD or EFG for such things.. and to HIJ when they have enough time, and want to see “high quality” doctors.. dont BCD, EFG etc still exist? or has ABC managed to overtake all of them? of course, it seems to have overtaken them in terms of fees.. i remember, EFG had very decent fees.. and BCD, though on the higher side, wasnt a “killer” by any means..

  11. The ABC is very expensive and there is five star canteen there, the relatives prefer the patient to be admitted to ABC, since they can have luxurious expenive food from that canteen. About 10 of my relatives were admitted to ABC and none came back alive, and most of the time bills came more than 1 lakhs. Now let me narrate another experience, one of my uncle became so ill and cannot even walk without a cane, and was treated in Private medical college, near Chengannur, when I visited he was lying in a general ward type at the top floor and no doctor no nurse nothing to enquire whats is his illness. I forcefully discharged him on my risk and took him to Trivandrum, I took him to consulation one of the third deputy of Gastro enterology dept Medical college with consulting fee given 100/- the Gastero ward at Medical college none can survive, I felt fainted about 100 mts from the bathroom, the doctor diagnozed he lack albumin in his blood and asked to take egg white for a week. Now he is very healthy and running like a boy without taking any medicine. So its better you consult a doctor working in Medical college at his home if you have some illness. SK hospital at Pangode is bit moderate now in Tivamdurm all other pvt hospitals rob you. Only if we common people keep neatness and clean our Medical college, govt hospitals are far far better , but there are some people who spit, dont flush toilets, make toilets a place for washing all dirty linen, and behvae cultureless to doctors and nurses make the govt hospitals not to deliver good service.

  12. Ha Ha! I completely agree with you on the Killer ABC.
Most of the Techopark employees have a medical insurance which makes them think that its safe. But actually its not! I know of many instances where they deliberately do tests and checks without any actually need…. just because someone else is paying the bill!

I have yet to check out this AYZ place! πŸ™‚

  13. lol..may be true, but come down to HIJ for the economy treatment and you never know with what you will be going back home, (if you ever come out of it)

So we live only once, so why risk ourselves? ABC may be robbing you, but atleast you are not left on the floor for 4 hours with a heart attack or forced to share the bed with cockroaches, rats and other pests.

  14. @sajith, yes I am beginning to get the picture. Hail Kerala!

@deepak, yes EFG and BCD still exists, but with their hi-fi equipments and hygiene standards, ABC became a favorite till they produced these pink papers.

@Sreekumar, the canteen is not so neat and the food pathetic. My cousin was taken ill twice after taking the canteen food. I wouldnt say relatives choose ABC to have the canteen food. On the other hand, many of them stay for nights outside the ICU with no rooms, sleeping in the floor. Sorry to know about the bad treatment to your uncle. Next time, something goes wrong, I will remember to think of a Medical College Doc πŸ™‚

@Robbie, yes. The medical insurance helps but mostly it wont cover half the expenses if you are there with a major problem. AYZ is pretty moderate and the food is great. I am only unhappy about their unfair parcel rates.

@mirage, true. You do get immediate attention and you feel less puky! But the unrequired tests and bills that came with it were too much to turn a blind eye. Also, I have witnessed a few lapses in service I wasnt happy about.

  15. I should say the name change ruined the post. 😦 but still i will have my say.. By grace of God, I never had to familiarise with any Hospitals Till Date.. I am in love with the food inMany restaurants in TVPM. Recentlyduring a goan trip me and My friend realised how cheaper the food is in Kerala. We had a Squid Butter fry in Goa for 150 Rs Per Plate and the same cost us 50 Rupees when we had it from Kasaragod. πŸ™‚

No one is going to file a Defamation suit against you for writing a truth, It can be done only if you post the same with Names in DC. πŸ™‚
