Machines and me

I had a trip today. But I was inside a vehicle most of the time so my chances of getting into trouble with the outside world were considerably reduced. Not that I complain but there was an unusual atmosphere of peace around me – which the people who know me well would vouch is extremely unusual.

The only time I got out was to pay a Hutch phone bill. They have installed one of those self-pay schemes and I was directed by the watchman to enter this new zone. I liked the idea. It reminded me of the first time I used an ATM. I liked pushing buttons on machines and see them do stuff. It’s like watching a stage show. These machines were definitely talented. I mean they knew what they were doing.

So I entered and no, sorry, no stories of misery or mishaps for me to offer there. It was all too straight forward even for someone like me to mess up. The only gave away was when the Hutch-helper warned me not to be scared as I inserted each currency note and the machine chewed it up angrily. I was ready with my best I-am-afraid-of-no-machines expression but each time the machine pulled the note out of my shaky hands, my head did a leap up and an “eep” escaped my mouth. The Hutch-helper kept telling me “I told you not to be scared” but seeing his expression, I had a feeling he was enjoying this.

But I was happy with this. No more having to face a face when you pay your phone bill. No more risk of any embarrassing situations I land myself into in the presence of human company. Machines were decent. They didn’t laugh at you, they didn’t scowl at you. I am all for a machine world. I don’t believe the terminator stories will ever come true. If there was to be a man vs. machine war, I am sure those kind hearted beings would give in and come to pat the human shoulders and say “War between us friends? No way pal! Why don’t you go back to your lazy routines and let us do all the work here?”

That’s it then. I will be back.

  4. In the picture, buttons/controls of the machine
are on the other side from where you stand.
It looks like you are trying do something
on the side of the machine. Those who dont
know English would interpret this picture as:
you are a thief and the person standing next
to you is your helper !!
